Literature Text

She decided that trusting in others
was like trying to scrub the mildew out of alleyways – useless.
Amidst the damp darkness, the grit and doubt would always grow back.
So she packed her bag and laced her shoes,
counted her pennies and left the threadbare city
to find somewhere she could rest her head without drowning her heart.
She dreamed of rolling fields and found a bicycle with broken wheels
she rode until it fell apart, and dreamed of rolling fields.
She dreamed of clear blue skies and found an aeroplane with creaking wings
she held on tight and landed somewhere blanketed in snow.
She wandered on and trusted in
the crooked road
her newfound home
to take her somewhere growing green with love and rich with hope.
