Literature Text
Optimism is not a sweetened cake.
Optimism is a decision you make
when your mind’s been on fire for five years straight
and sometimes you have to make it thirty-seven times a day
again and again and again.
When you were six your dad told you this:
you have to learn to fall the right way
and roll over, keep your wits sharp, get up again;
keep your belly guarded just the same.
So I fight and fight back for survival’s sake.
This is the decision I make.
This is the decision I make.
This is the decision I make again.
